This is the second Inuit mask I've found carved of fossilized whale bone, which I always have an eye out for--this one unsigned and the age of which I am not certain, though I would guess mid 20th century Native Alaskan Inuit, likely specifically Iñupiat. These are often referred to as spirit masks, this one with what appears to be branching tree carved into the forehead, like an all-seeing eye of the natural world. The lighter color and smooth texture across the forehead, nose and cheeks I believe must be a natural animal grease, though from whale, seal or otherwise I have not been able to determine through researching, though I have seen it on a few other masks of this type and find the effect very beautiful.
7 5/8” t x 6 7/8” w x 1” d and in great condition. At the top the mask is strung with sinew thread for hanging.
