In school or formal settings, when someone is instructed to write “lengthwise,” it means to hold or position the paper so that writing goes top to bottom along the longer edge. This is the most common orientation for documents, essays, forms, and notebooks.

• On a standard 8.5" x 11" bond paper:

  • Lengthwise (Portrait): 8.5 inches wide × 11 inches tall

  • Crosswise (Landscape): 11 inches wide × 8.5 inches tall
