Lengthwise paper refers to using a sheet of paper in vertical orientation, also known as portrait mode—with the short side (width) at the top and the long side (length) running vertically.
In school or formal settings, when someone is instructed to write “lengthwise,” it means to hold or position the paper so that writing goes top to bottom along the longer edge. This is the most common orientation for documents, essays, forms, and notebooks.
On a standard 8.5" x 11" bond paper:
Lengthwise (Portrait): 8.5 inches wide × 11 inches tall
Crosswise (Landscape): 11 inches wide × 8.5 inches tall
So, lengthwise = vertical writing format, often used for formal written work or assignments.
