This dramatic and unnerving early Victorian print is one of 96 copper plate engravings in the Picturesque Views in England and Wales series undertaken by famed Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner in the 1820s and 1830s. There were supposed to be over 100 of these engravings done after his painting, but it was an enormous financial undertaking and the project flopped at the time, although it’s become very significant and loved in the history of printmaking. Like many of his other works, the Stonehenge piece makes the viewer aware of how humanity is dwarfed by the sublime power of nature: The scene depicts a violent thunderstorm where the shepherd has been struck dead by lightning. His trusty dog barks hysterically by his side.

The print dates to the 1830s and was later matted and framed professionally. The entire piece measures about 16” x 13” and is in excellent condition. Ships fully insured.
