Cecilia McDowall, one of England's leading vocal composers! Requiem inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks! The "Da Vinci Requiem" by Cecilia McDowall (b.1951), one of the most celebrated British composers of our time and winner of the British Composers' Prize (now the Ivers Composers' Prize) in 2014, was inspired by a letter from Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott. It is an artistic and philosophical work in seven movements, with a text that combines a Latin text selected by the composer from the "Mass for the Dead" with excerpts from Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks. The "70 Degrees Below Zero" is a three-movement work written for tenor soloist and chamber orchestra. Based on a letter from Antarctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott to his wife, Cecilia McDowall says that the past data collected by Scott and his colleagues is the basis for today's research, and that the work expresses a desire to connect the "past" with the "present.
